Returning Medication

·2072 words·10 mins

I hate to RTS (Return To Stock) medication. Plain and simple. Its just a fact that I really dont like to fill something, then have to undo my work because you’re an idiot and didn’t want it (yet called it in to be refilled). Yes, surprisingly enough it does cost the store money to fill your Rx even if you don’t pick it up.
If your child gets an antibiotic, and I ask you “Can he/she take a pill?” while showing you (and your child) what it looks like, and you both say “yes”; I don’t want you to return said prescription 30 min later and want liquid. When I warn you that its a lot of liquid (because your child is a pussy overweight 16 year old who can swallow mcdonalds but not an amoxicillin capsule) and it tastes bad, I really do mean it. The stuff tastes like shit, and its a lot easier to take 1 tablet than 2 teaspoons three to 4 times a day. I told you this straight out.
Then you wonder why I go postal when you come BACK the next day and want tablets again because your douche of a child doesn’t like the taste/quanity of the liquid THAT I WARNED YOU ABOUT THE PREVIOUS DAY! If I made it Big Mac flavored, then your child would drink the whole damn bottle!
Oh, this gets even better.
Then you have the BALLS to get angry at me because I charged you ANOTHER copay. I’m sorry, but I cant suddenly remove the water out of that amoxicillin suspension. Its yours to keep as a reminder of not-listening to what I’m saying.
I’m sorry if you’re just not a good listener. Obviously you didn’t listen when the whole topic of ‘condoms’ or ‘contraception’ came up while you were 13 years old. You did however listen to that deadbeat baby-daddy of yours when he said that he ‘loved you’ and ‘raise this child together’. I don’t care about your pity party, I only care that I lost all the money I made out of this Rx by redoing it yet again.
Yes, I did go there and I am going to hell.
Oh, and to our other customers who don’t listen:
When you call in a refill on your medication and are 3 weeks early; then have the balls to argue with me on the phone and swear up and down that you didn’t receive them (even though you signed for them). When you find them at home, just shut your mouth, and eat the cost of the early refill. Don’t come waltzing back in and demand a refund on the extra fill that I did for you.
People wonder why pharmacists drink….

And so I see, being a pharmacist is not just about drugs, it’s more like listening to customer’s crap? Heh. Luckily not all are like that.

One simple rule that I am sure to point out to my patients that bitch about every thing above. Once it has left the counter I cannot take it back.
Whether it is down the aisle or all the way home. Granted if I screwed something up, fine I will take it and eat the cost. But if you get home are realize that it was not the med you were looking for, or that med was discontinued and you forgot about it and phoned it in anyway, tough shit. NOT my responsibility to look after what the doctor has dc’d if doc does not want to share his charts and notes with me, I AM NOT A FUCKING PSYCHIC!
I have ONE local doc out of about 500 that will fax me updated med lists of what was added and what was discontinued for my patients because he understands what we go through. Seriously I love this guy, patient see’s him, and I get new Rxs for what the person is on, as well as what they are being taken off of as well as any interesting tidbits such as don’t give narcs, BP still high, increasing X, let me know if he still complains of headaches or if he tells you BP readings etc. Also, if the doc does not have a clue he will actually CALL ME and ask my opinion because I am the DRUG DUDE and I know a hell alot more about drugs than he does. He is really good at diagnosing shit but sometimes get stumped when his usuals do not do and amazingly the pharmacist gets a call instead of him just guessing! If we had more docs like that I might actually enjoy more days.
Oh, listen to this BULL SHIT. I have a cash paying customer come in for Vancocin 250 1 TID for 7 days, cost $592.99. I ask what she is taking it for, my first guess would be C.Diff but she has been out of the hospital for 3 months now…could not be that…nope a UTI. How much sense does that make? it is barely even absorbed, and if you give IV dosing it is something crazy like 1000mg IV q12h or some shit like that. I called up the doc and basically called her a moron and wondered why some cipro or bactrim would not do? apparently cipro did not work and for some odd reason vancocin was the second choice, sorry but what book did she look in?
Thank god I asked her before I filled the prescription

I know this sounds stupid, but I had no idea that pharmacists did this much thinking about the customers. And I’m not being sarcastic—I’m serious. It always looks to me like you guys/ladies are just standing there, silently, filling prescriptions with a bland look on your faces. None of the pharmacists I’ve ever seen ever seem to show any emotions, mild or angry.
I wonder if any angry pharmacists have ever flipped out and finally gone pharmaceuti-cal? (Get it? Postal? Pharmaceutical? Postal? Pharmaceutical?)

I just wanted to say that you are hilarious. We read you daily at ESI and you put it to the crowd straight. Let me tell you about a lovely caller that I’ve had the pleasue of knnowing for a year. She thinks she can return everything she orders. She received a package fed ex that was sitting in the hallway where they had been painting and insisted that I connect her to a rph to assure her that her medication is not “contaminated” by paint fumes. I highly doubt that the smell of paint will get through the fed ex box, the RX bag and then the capped RX bottle. Really now. Then these idiots think that you can re-dispense the medication that they send back to us. Ummmm…NO. This same patient made us contact UPS to send a package back to our warehouse and ship it out regular mail. And then called me days later bitching that it was our fault she hadn’t received it yet.
Just wanted to say thank you for the laughs.

Get over it, you pompus ass. Maybe if you did a better job of explaining things the first time, people wouldn’t misunderstand you. I hate pharmacists like you. Just because you’re wearing a white coat and you stand behind the counter doesn’t mean your smarter or better than the people on the other side.

I’ve read a lot of your stuff and you always seem to hit everything right on. It makes me feel better to see this. The pharmacist I work with is…well…nearly completely opposite. You’re so refreshing!

The general public just does not get it. I’ve experienced the events related here many times in my 35 years of practice.
I laugh at your rants because they ring of the truth.

Actually Bob:
He is smarter, that is why he is the poor bastard making sure your BP meds get filled everytime. God forbid you actually diet, watch your own weight, etc etc. How would you like it if we went to your job had you work and spend all these resources just so you could break even on the sale, then demand you explain the meaning of life to me while my my ass ignores you because i’m to busy thinking about whats on TV tonight, only to have me come back , throw your work in your face , and call you a “pompus ass” because i was to fucking retarded to pay attention to you.
With all the medicine in the world and all the new techologies one constant remains the same. You can’t cure stupid.

The pharmacy I work at….once an RX leaves the store we don’t take it back. Unless we made an error. But if you’re on 5 different strengths of a drug and you call in the wrong one… tough shit… eat your copay and pay cash this month for the drug you wanted.

I had an incident recently where a prescription was filled at a grocery store, paid for then failed to be bagged with my groceries at the check out counter. Got home and realized it was missing and went back. Long story short, security cameras revealed the next day that a store employee behind me in line received my prescription and took it home. Did not notify the store until discovered on camera then returned it. I was called back by the store and was given my prescription back by the pharmacy. Is this legal to reissue a drug in this type of situation? Should note the prescription is a narcotic.
Thanks.
